Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2

2000 was a good year. Baggy jeans and wallet chains were de rigueur, all the cool kids were listening to pop-punk and the Tony Hawk series hit it's peak. The first game was good and the multitude of further sequels ranged from 'meh' to 'godawful', but THPS2 is arguably the best the genre's ever produced. it took the open ended gameplay laid out in the first game and expanded on it - upping the number of objectives per level to ten, and introducing manuals that let you string together tricks between jumps. The sense of empowerment was awesome-and who hasnt fantasised about busting into the school gym out of hours to wreak havok, all to a soundtrack of slaming guitars ?

The Raid

Director Gareth Evans Starring Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Donny Alamsyah ETA 24 Sep

An Indonesian martial arts film directed by a Welshman, The Raid combines brilliantly choreographed action sequences with brutal violence. The simple setup - police have to take down a crime boss who lives at the top of an impenetrable tower block - leaves the fighting to speak for itself, and altough its relentlessness becomes wearisome at times, an impressive moment is never far away.

Tenchu : Stealth Assassins
THE ORIGINAL MASTER OF AVOIDING BEEING SEEN

Beating Metal Gear Solid out of the stealth stables by only a matter of months, this was the first PlayStation game to really focus on the art of staying completely out of sight. With you playing as ninja assassins, each level was a small open-world playground that let you creep around guard patrols and scamper over rooftoops using a grapple hook in search of the perfect kill and the cleanest playtrough. you also had two characters: a slower, hard hitting ninja called Rikimaru and the faster but more delicate Ayame (dual wielding two short swords). It's worth noting as well that, at a time when 3D was still a fairly new phenomenon, this went for a full over the shoulder third person view, while Metal Gear Solid was still largely sticking to top down cameras. Admittedly all of the levels were set at night because that was easier to render on PS1, but for many gamers, this was the first time they experienced true 3D stealth.

PES 3

it's now fashionable to talk about liking pro Evo in the early '00s as a mark of distinguished taste - the work of konami's virtual kickball team under Shingo Takatsuka spoken of in the same severe and hushed tones as scoresese in the '70s or pre-season five the Wire. Which is to say that it's the purist's choice, and PeS 3, released inn 2003, was the purest of them all. living in the shadow of FIFA's ubiquity, PES 3 was the ultimate expression of Konami's discipline and technique (so much so that the cover, in a shiny bald two fingers to FIFA's annual superstar, featured referee Pierluigi Collina). it was the peak from which Pro Evo's been falling ever since - the gameplay convincing and the Master Leauge perfected to the point it could realistically be played forever.
