Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2

2000 was a good year. Baggy jeans and wallet chains were de rigueur, all the cool kids were listening to pop-punk and the Tony Hawk series hit it's peak. The first game was good and the multitude of further sequels ranged from 'meh' to 'godawful', but THPS2 is arguably the best the genre's ever produced. it took the open ended gameplay laid out in the first game and expanded on it - upping the number of objectives per level to ten, and introducing manuals that let you string together tricks between jumps. The sense of empowerment was awesome-and who hasnt fantasised about busting into the school gym out of hours to wreak havok, all to a soundtrack of slaming guitars ?

The Raid

Director Gareth Evans Starring Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, Donny Alamsyah ETA 24 Sep

An Indonesian martial arts film directed by a Welshman, The Raid combines brilliantly choreographed action sequences with brutal violence. The simple setup - police have to take down a crime boss who lives at the top of an impenetrable tower block - leaves the fighting to speak for itself, and altough its relentlessness becomes wearisome at times, an impressive moment is never far away.

Tenchu : Stealth Assassins
THE ORIGINAL MASTER OF AVOIDING BEEING SEEN

Beating Metal Gear Solid out of the stealth stables by only a matter of months, this was the first PlayStation game to really focus on the art of staying completely out of sight. With you playing as ninja assassins, each level was a small open-world playground that let you creep around guard patrols and scamper over rooftoops using a grapple hook in search of the perfect kill and the cleanest playtrough. you also had two characters: a slower, hard hitting ninja called Rikimaru and the faster but more delicate Ayame (dual wielding two short swords). It's worth noting as well that, at a time when 3D was still a fairly new phenomenon, this went for a full over the shoulder third person view, while Metal Gear Solid was still largely sticking to top down cameras. Admittedly all of the levels were set at night because that was easier to render on PS1, but for many gamers, this was the first time they experienced true 3D stealth.

PES 3

it's now fashionable to talk about liking pro Evo in the early '00s as a mark of distinguished taste - the work of konami's virtual kickball team under Shingo Takatsuka spoken of in the same severe and hushed tones as scoresese in the '70s or pre-season five the Wire. Which is to say that it's the purist's choice, and PeS 3, released inn 2003, was the purest of them all. living in the shadow of FIFA's ubiquity, PES 3 was the ultimate expression of Konami's discipline and technique (so much so that the cover, in a shiny bald two fingers to FIFA's annual superstar, featured referee Pierluigi Collina). it was the peak from which Pro Evo's been falling ever since - the gameplay convincing and the Master Leauge perfected to the point it could realistically be played forever.

Grand Chase Review

Grand Chase Review

Grand Chase was developed by the Korean company ‘KOG Studios’ and originally released back in 2003. Only in the beginning of 2008 was the game localized and brought to the North American market by Ntreev, the publishers of another 2D MMORPG with cute graphics — Trickster Online. The graphics of Grand Chase were not very impressive even back in 2003 but fancy visuals were never the goal. Instead, Grand Chase is a casual friendly game with simple controls and a mainly cooperative gameplay style. Side scrollers are hard to come by these days so it’s always good to see imaginative games like this being brought over from overseas.

Three For One
Grand Chase doesn’t have a character creation process, instead new players have access to three female characters: a melee fighter, archer, and mage. Each of these can be selected at any time before starting a game. Each levels up and has their own equipment and missions. There are an additional five characters that can be unlocked, 4 of which are male but the fact that none of the starting characters are male can be frustrating. For a detailed explanation of what each character does and their job progression, take a look at the overview tab. Overall, I feel Grand Chase has a good concept going here. Why bother forcing players to make multiple characters or accounts? Since each character must be leveled up independently, this feature also adds a lot to the game’s play time. Unlocking and leveling up all 8 characters is not something most players will commit to, but there are always completionists out there.

Left to Right
Unlike traditional MMORPGs, Grand Chase has no persistent world and works more in a lobby fashion where players host rooms and others join. There are currently two servers which never get more than mildly populated, so finding a full group of adventurers is not always easy. A short, optional tutorial is available to teach the game’s controls but it’s really not very helpful otherwise. The tutorial pits you against a motionless foe that acts as a training dummy for you to try out all of the game’s attacks. Gameplay is handled exclusively with the keyboard while interface navigation is done through the mouse. Since Grand Chase is a 2D side scrolling game, players can only move left or right, the up arrow causes you to jump and the down arrow descends players to the previous level. ‘Z’ performs your basic attack while holding Z activates special skills. Which skill your character performs is based on how long you hold the ‘z’ key before releasing. The longer you hold, the more powerful the spell. Players can also dash by double tapping either left or right and perform aerial attacks by hitting ‘z’ while jumping. By spamming the attack key, your character pulls off some impressive combos. This, along with occasionally moving away and waiting for the AI controlled monsters to do their predictable attacks, is usually enough to get past most stages.

Into the Forest
There are currently three continents in the Grand Chase world but players start with access to only the first. Each continent has roughly a dozen stages but it won’t take long to get sick of them. Players will find themselves playing through each stage many, many times since various quest requirements cannot be met with a single run-through. To make matters worse, each stage has three difficult settings and certain quests are tied to specific difficulty settings. If you’re looking to work up more than one character at a time, expect to run through some of the stages dozens of times. The fact that you have to repeat stages so often may be frustrating but don’t let that bother you too much, the gameplay in Grand Chase is fast paced and the early stages can be cleared within minutes with a group of four players. Each level has a boss at the end which makes for an exciting finish. Items collected throughout the stage are randomly distributed at the end and the game encourages cooperation by rewarding bonus experience based on the size of the party. This makes grinding through easy stages alone unproductive, but finding other players to group with is not always easy.

Side Scrolling Battles
Players looking for an alternative way to earn experience and prefer a more competitive playstyle can turn to the PvP mode. Players can actually earn more experience from PvPing than they can from playing story stages. The experience earned is proportional to how well you perform, so players can’t take advantage of this experience method until later levels when they stand a chance in PvP. A tab at the top of the screen puts players in a simple lobby where they can see matches hosted by other players. There is both a team and free for all game mode with up to 6 players per round participating. Other options include ‘Tag Match’ where each player can use two characters and swap between them during the battle. A special item mode can be selected which makes power ups appear around the map. These range from temporary invisibility, invulnerability, damage increases and more. It’s usually much easier to find a PvP game than it is to find a decent group for the PvE missions, but the level ranges are usually staggering.

Accessorize!
Players earn GP by completing missions, quests, and by performing well in PvP. With this GP, they can head to the in-game store and buy new equipment. There are many pages of clothes, weapons, and accessories available for purchase with either GP or real money. The sheer number of items a player can have equipped at one time is hard to believe.  I’ve seen people with a slime pet following them, necklaces, helmets, glowing lights around them and even a gopher over their heads all at once. Most of these items serve a functional use by providing stat boosts but almost every item is temporary, meaning they will disappear after a set time. Even equipment received as quest rewards are timed which can leave you naked until you start playing again and earn new gear. I’ve heard people complain that too many items require real cash to purchase but from my experience, the store had plenty options for free players. Currently, the max level is 60 but the early levels go by very fast which lets you experiment with all three of the starting characters and decide which play style you prefer. Overall, the story missions are relatively easy provided you have a somewhat competent team – the PvP, on the other hand, is much more complex. Since combat is done in real time, getting a feel for how attacks work and timing your dashes, dodges, and jumps is very important. With that said, Grand Chase has a little for everyone who can get past the simplistic graphics.

Final Verdict: Good
Grand Chase is beginning to show its age and while not the most complicated game, it has simple yet satisfying gameplay to keep players entertained. With a unique style, three continents to explore, eight characters to develop and a skill based PvP mode, Grand Chase has plenty of content to keep fans interested.

Grand Chase Tour - Season 3
Back in spring 2010, SG Interactive (formerly known as Ntreev USA) released season 3 updates for Grand Chase, a multiplayer online brawler with cute anime flavored boys and girls that love beating the crap out of monsters, evil villains and each other. Season 3 featured numerous updates including a complete overhaul for missions, items and user Interfaces,  plus brand new dungeons , land and tons more.

I used to play this game way back before it was even in English, and I was pretty damn good at it, so I was more than ready to give the new Grand Chase a go.

Tour Start
The tour started off kind of slow, as the first stop on the tour was a trip to the game's tutorial mode. Training with the tutorial mode has been incredibly revamped, allowing you to try out every character available with tons of possible tweaks and combinations. Back in the day, there was only Elesis, Lire and Arme. But now, eight new characters have joined the fight, such as Jin the martial arts expert and Amy the divine dancer. As much as I wanted to give everyone a try, I decided to get re-acquainted with Elesis.

Grand Chase MMORPG 16 Combo
With the time I spent fooling around with the tutorial mode, I re-learned some of Elesis' bread n' butter combos. During this, I noticed the "Type 1" icon hovering over the MP bar. The GM explains that some characters have the ability to switch between two different skills sets with a quick press of the spacebar. Skill switching opened up a whole new set of possibilities for me, so I was pretty eager to try them in action when I had the chance.

After I finished warming up in the tutorial, I was asked to hop on the Gorgos server and from there; we took to the equipment screen so the GM could explain, in fine detail, all the nice features that shows how much Grand Chase has evolved. In the previous versions of Grand Chase, stat properties that went with your equipment were very bare bones, but now there are tons of new stats properties to take into consideration, such as Critical hit rate, Counterattack resistance, HP recovery rate and more.

But it doesn't end there: Some of your equipment can be stat tweaked even further with the properties menu (on some equipment) that will let you select several options to fit your fighting tactics.

Grand Chase Item Properties
But wait... there's even more tweaking you can do! Grand Chase also has a card system that allows you to socket your equipment with cards of monsters you've slain in combat. Each card holds small effects that can be combined with other cards to create wicked combinations.

Grand Chase Monster Card
They've also added a crafting system that is familiar to those found in MMORPGs. Simply put: You can use this system to create equipment that can be found in the shop or equipment that can only be created by crafting.

So many customization options, so little time! Even though I didn't care much for any of the customization available, it was neat to know that every detail of your character could be tweaked 'til you heart's content.

But enough talk of customization... It was time to take some action! I joined up with GM_Bawkzie to check out some of the dungeons. We started off slow: Over at the Trial Forest, we beat up a couple of mushroom dudes before heading off to defeating a giant tree monster. Of course, these monsters weren't a challenge for us, so we jumped over to the Wyrm's Maw dungeon to take on some more adequate enemies.

Lots of Number Free to play MMORPG
The place was crawling with fire breathing baddies and I was itching to take them all out. Despite my confidence, I ended up dying twice before deciding not to play like a maniac, all while GM_Bawkzie hanged back and tore the place up without getting a scratch.

Grand Chase 1552 Combo MMORPG
After we finished our dungeon run, it was time for the main event: PvP! But before we got started, GM_Bawkzie wanted to explain a little bit about the skill tree system: Adopted from many other MMORPGs out there, making use of skill trees in Grand Chase allows you to gain new skills after mastering a few prerequisites. Skill trees are broken up into active and passive skills.

Grand Chase Skill set MMORPG
I was also asked to try out Dio, one of the recent additions to Grand Chase's playable characters. Dio apparently doesn't play out quite the same as everyone else, as he relies on AP instead of MP to perform skills. Also unlike the other Grand Chase characters: he can create each attack links from his basic skills and specials, making him very easy to play, but difficult to master.

Grand Chase Christmas Time
But there was one more thing I decided to ask before the tour ended. I wanted to know what was up with the little gray dragon that GM_Bawkzie had. Then I was told that Grand Chase featured a neat little pet system: While most MMOs included pets that simply boosted your stats and showed off how rich you were, pets in Grand Chase actually fight alongside you. Pets need to be taken care off with feeding and battle experience so they can evolve and gain new attacks.

We hopped back into another PvP battle to show off what some of the pets could do. I had a little penguin pet by my side that shot weak balls of fire, while GM_Bawkzie had some kind of robo maid that shot a crapton of lasers that could stun enemies. Needless to say, it was obvious which one would be more useful in a fight.

Grand Chase Game Master MMORPG
There were a lot of other features that were mentioned during the tour, such as guild functions, a couples function and even a park for players to run around and just chat.

Grand Chase Party
Overall, I had lots of fun playing Grand Chase after being away from it for such a long time. A lot of features gave the game some much needed depth while keeping the core gameplay simple enough for gamers of all skill ranges to enjoy.

I had such a good time that I might even start playing again! I may not be a total pro since I haven't been at it for a while, but I should be good enough to beat newbs at the least, so watch out!
